Rambling Post of Ramblingness

Shit weather today led to half an hour spent in the basement at work as a tornado came very close to campus. The emergency warnings led to some people saying, "Do we really need to go to the basement?" Um, the public areas have very large windows because this building was constructed before AC and so there is a LOT OF GLASS THAT CAN SPAGHETTIIZE YOU. YES WE'RE GOING TO THE FUCKING BASEMENT.

(Oh yeah, that's why I work in public services. Why do you ask?)

After that the day got better, although one of my students couldn't "find" her reading for class today--even though it's online, the url is in the syllabus, we showed where the link to it is on the class website last week.... I don't know. Kids. Oy.

Spent some time looking for Lord of the Rings fanzines and ILLing some stuff. I have a vague idea for a paper about Constructing Lothiriel since anyone who has to write her is basically creating an OFC and this fascinates me.

Anyhow, got the Heinlein bio and looking forward to that. Also finished Mockingjay which I'll review at length more later--I'm still chewing it over and now am toying with the idea of a Reboot/Hunger Games AU. IDEK.

SPAGHETTIIZE. TRUFAX.

Yeah, I have nothing helpful to say to this. :)

It's a word. Totally.

To, er, me.

[identity profile] marthawells.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, everybody in my husband's department got told to stay in the hall away from the windows or go down to the basement, too.

Good times. And afterwards there were student workers who were all "What?" And it's like, uhhh this is why you need to sign up for the emergency notifications. They can SAVE YOUR LIFE and all.

I missed it but apparently it was definitely scary green out there. My boss stayed on the first floor to make sure anyone who came in could get to the basement with us.

[identity profile] marthawells.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was pretty bad for a bit. I think we got lucky that it wasn't any worse.

[identity profile] caitri.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, seriously. I'm really glad the tornado watch expired early this evening too.

I was in a tornado when I was a kid and I've gotten twitchy about them ever since then. I was extra extra hyper today because of it. :/

[identity profile] marthawells.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I've never been in one, for which I'm really glad. A few years after I graduated, there was an ungodly huge one that touched down across the highway from the duplex I was living in. It was so big it looked like it was much closer. It went up and hovered over the university baseball stadium while a game was in progress, but fortunately left without touching down again. It was incredibly scary.

[identity profile] caitri.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah they're scary as heck. I was maybe eight at the time, so what I remember is my mom sending me to the basement while she and my brother put the windows up (back when they told people to do that) through the house, and just this unholy sound of wind and pressure.

When it was safe there were trees down everywhere, and my swingset was wrapped around a tree that still stood. It was pretty incredible.

[identity profile] caitri.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. Hence I get nervous whenever there's a tornado watch/warning to this day. Not fun!

[identity profile] suddenlyswept.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I think you should have let them stay up there. evolution in action :D

man - kids are dumb. like seriously dumb.

btw, i am now watching the two towers extended edition cause i couldn't wait for a set movie night. :D

Precious!

[identity profile] caitri.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
LOL.

TTT. Karl. Sigh. Why are there not more Eomer fanzines/fic out there??? I have an ADDICTION now. :/

[identity profile] suddenlyswept.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
*sighs* there is more of karl in the extended edition ;D so lovely.

Rohan!!!!!!!!

i've never read a fanzine but i offer sympathy :D

[identity profile] caitri.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Wel lthis is where professional nerddom comes into play--last week I came across a history of Tolkien fanzines up until 1964, this week I've been trying to locate newer stuff, but pretty much everything I've found has been movie-verse, almost completely centered on either the Hobbits, Aragorn/Boromir, or Elves. So what happened with the zine fandom from 1964-2001? I WANT TO KNOOOOOOW!!!!!

[identity profile] suddenlyswept.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I have no doubt you will manage to discover :D i have great faith in your researching skills

whats with the aragorn/boromir obsession? i'm not sure i really get that pairing but okay *shrugs*
ext_409703: (Guthwine)

[identity profile] caitri.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Aragorn/Boromir are huge in the LOTR fandom. It's the angst thing. Although a few weeks ago some friends and I were talking (http://caitri.livejournal.com/319365.html) and came up with a theory about those two....

[identity profile] suddenlyswept.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
well, that was hilarious :D

though i am now intensely disturbed that there are father/son shippers out there . . . i mean, i like gay porn as much as the next girl. i just prefer mine to not be within the same family :D

btw- um, awesome defending of Eomer who totally WAS hot AND COMPLETELY BADASS!
ext_409703: (Guthwine 3 - world ahead)

[identity profile] caitri.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Damn straight, he was.

And so was Faramir. Just not AS badass.

[identity profile] suddenlyswept.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
i agree. i mean, he was all "fine, i will go to my death just because you're an asshole"

and it wasn't his fault he was nearly burned while being unconscious.

and he was hot :D
ext_409703: (Guthwine)

[identity profile] caitri.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
And he was all tragic and wore black. What wasn't to like?!

[identity profile] suddenlyswept.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
plus . . . he looked pretty good covered in oil. not an easy feat.
ext_409703: (I think I'm adorable)

[identity profile] caitri.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
....ROFLMAO.

This is accurate.

[identity profile] suddenlyswept.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
dude- i totally didn't know that merry and pip got eaten and regurgitated by a tree

[identity profile] suddenlyswept.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
its in the extended edition! i promise. it was weird. and then treebeard had to come rescue them.

ooh, and i know eowyn marries faramir but then what happens to them? who rules rohan? eomer?
ext_409703: (Guthwine 3 - world ahead)

[identity profile] caitri.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Eomer becomes King of Rohan and marries Lothiriel; Faramir Ithilien becomes the first Prince of Ithilien and Eowyn's the Lady of Ithilien (not princess...Tolkien specified that, IDEK).

[identity profile] suddenlyswept.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
one last question - what the heck is ithilien??
ext_409703: (Guthwine 3 - world ahead)

[identity profile] caitri.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Ithilien is a neighboring land to Gondor that was captured by Mordor. When Sam and Frodo meet Faramir that's where they are. After the War Faramir rebuilds it, Legolas and some Elves move in, it's nice.

Totally. Legolas has a decorating business, Gimli hangs out all the time, it's awesome.

[identity profile] suddenlyswept.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 04:06 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] gadgetorious.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 04:07 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] suddenlyswept.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm starting a new one cause i'm scared of what lj will do in order to make the box more narrow. :D

You know he named it Elvish Elegance- Gain the flawless taste developed over millennia.

and Gimli's totally leaving his boots all over the place and having his feet on the coffee table with his big toe sticking out of a hole, leaving crumbs everywhere and slowly driving Legolas closer and closer to the edge until Gimli is forced to flee to Gondor for the weekend to hang out with Aragorn

[identity profile] amine-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-09-08 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh what complete idiots - I agree with the evolution in action part xD

And I like the idea of Constructing Lothiriel - sounds like a very good paper :D
