Shit weather today led to half an hour spent in the basement at work as a tornado came very close to campus. The emergency warnings led to some people saying, "Do we really need to go to the basement?" Um, the public areas have very large windows because this building was constructed before AC and so there is a LOT OF GLASS THAT CAN SPAGHETTIIZE YOU. YES WE'RE GOING TO THE FUCKING BASEMENT.

(Oh yeah, that's why I work in public services. Why do you ask?)

After that the day got better, although one of my students couldn't "find" her reading for class today--even though it's online, the url is in the syllabus, we showed where the link to it is on the class website last week.... I don't know. Kids. Oy.

Spent some time looking for Lord of the Rings fanzines and ILLing some stuff. I have a vague idea for a paper about Constructing Lothiriel since anyone who has to write her is basically creating an OFC and this fascinates me.

Anyhow, got the Heinlein bio and looking forward to that. Also finished Mockingjay which I'll review at length more later--I'm still chewing it over and now am toying with the idea of a Reboot/Hunger Games AU. IDEK.

So I've been taking these seminars on instructing first year college students. So far we've discussed ways of learning, course descriptions, that sort of thing. Today we were discussing syllabi. Here's what occurred today. I thought I would share.

INSTRUCTOR: Think of your syllabus as a metaphor. How would you describe your syllabus.

CLASS ponders a moment.

YOUNG PROF #1: (proudly) A journey!

YOUNG PROF #2: A roadmap! (beams)

YOUNG PROF #3: A musical! (happily)

ME: A Mexican Inquisition broadside.

EVERYONE: ???

ME: A list of proscribed materials, followed by a description of how you can be excommunicated, followed by a list of ways you can save yourself.

EVERYONE: ...Ookay!

Yeah. I put the "special" in "special teaching methods" don't I?

So school starts tomorrow. Scott teaches his class on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I teach mine on Wednesdays. so far I have eight students, all girls. My math friends were calculating the odds of this thing gleefully.

Did some shopping this weekend as well as cleaning. We now have some Japanese accent pillows for our futon and our house almost looks grown-up now. I also bought our tickets for the Browncoat Ball which I am exceedingly excited about. We're opting to attend the special activities in tai chi and filk music.

Also finally turned in the scholarship application to next year's Rare Book School in the hopes I could take a course on codicology* or similar.

Got some recent emails from people I knew in high school. I guess people feel nostalgic this time of year? Anyhow, one was yet another from my former best friend who periodically emails/stalks me. Delete. Another from a guy who expressed astonishment that I'm faculty at a nationally recognized university. Not quite sure how to react to that. (Uh, yeah, so I'm smarter than I was always given credit for? Thanks?)

Anyhow. Stay tuned.

*That there's fancy talk for studying medieval manuscripts. ;) It may also be a favorite new word.
