Prompted by recently reading somewhere negative commentary on the Wonder Woman film because her power was love and compassion. Also ass-kicking, but also love. And right now I'm rereading Tamora Pierce's Alanna books and reading for the first time her Protector of the Small books, all of which involve girls wanting to be knights and performing heroics. But all of their heroics are centered around martial arts and what we would consider traditional bravery in terms of standing up to bullies, fighting literal monsters, and so on.

And what struck me is how we kind of have this narrative of heroism = violence, and therefore women heroes have to either 1) be born warriors (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Wonder Woman), 2) be traumatized and become warriors (Jessica Jones, River Tam), or 3) choose to be warriors For Reasons (Agent Carter, Gabrielle from Xena), etc.

But like, there isn't much of a narrative for non-fightey heroics?

And then on the flip-side, slightly, you get stuff like Pacific Rim that does switch it up, with Raleigh being the emotional nurturing one, and Mako being the Traumatized and Opting for Warrior one.

And so I guess my main thought is to wonder: What does a non-fightey woman hero look like? Is she possible?

Yeah. I would be so tempted to write an Avengers/BTVS mash-up epic, only Joss Whedon already did it. SO.

So Scott has been painting his zombie mini army, which I blame for a perfectly logical dream of Buffy fighting zombies with Captain America. Which, I just want them fighting something togethernow. I'm trying to decide how they would even function together: I can see the mutual respect, Buffy thinking Steve is a hottie, Steve completely admiring a woman who has literally spent half her life saving the world, Buffy worrying it would be like Riley all over again, Steve being appalled by the Initiative.

TELL MY BRAIN TO STOP.

Disclaimer: I know this may come as a shock, but I am not, amazing as it may seem, Gene Roddenberry, J.J. Abrams, Paramount or Bad Robot. Nor Joss Whedon or Mutant Enemy. Just so you know.

Builds very much on Twilight, True Blood, and Buffy. Also, Stefan appears to have stolen Mick St. John's ring (although I did not know it had sunlight protection powers)

Buffy:

-High School is so HARD
-highschoolers have ISSUES
-supernatural shenanigans as metaphors

Twilight:

-disaffected teenage protagonist (hereafter DTP) with issues
-stolid jock would-be love interest who is so totally not even in the running
-vampires can hang out during the day (or at least they can with a ring--which was also a brief plot point for Spike on Buffy and Angel)
-an unintentionally laughable "OMG WTF?!" reaction scene from the high schoolers of the DTP with the vampire hottie

True Blood:

-Southern goth excessiveness
-alcoholism/drug abuse for humans as relates to blood for vamps
-African-American girlfriend BFF
-Civil War obsession

Twilight and True Blood and Buffy:

-two hot supernatural love interests
-vamps need invites to come inside a human's house (I particularly alike that it's clear this is what's going on but they don't discuss it in the pilot, because at this point all of us have seen either Buffy, Twilight, or True Blood)
-lots of nature scenes (vampires are....organic???)

Anyhow, color this mediocre so far. It tries, it really does, but it's not smart like Buffy or Trueblood, or earnestly earnest (yup, that's what I meant to writer, earnestly earnest) like Twilight. Will stay tuned with all my snark factor.

So...does this count as a resistant reading of the text? *G*

So this may be my favorite of the new books.

Highlights:

-Bi-curiosity!

-DRACULA!!!!!!!!!!!!

-The near-reveal of Twilight!

-DRACULA!!!!!!!!!!!!

-More characterization for Xander!

-DRACULA!!!!!!!!!!!!

*ahem* You may be sensing a pattern in my enthusiasms. Seriously, though, a very solid story that moves multiple threads along seamlessly and reads very much like the show itself. I like.

I basically gave up on having a formal lecture as it is way more fun to just moderate discussion. And oh do those kids discuss! This week the topic was television's place in popular culture, and they went to town. There was also a lengthy digression on how awesome Tamora Pierce is. Tee hee.
