important vulture updates
Feb. 27th, 2026 11:01 pmDid you know vultures are sexually monomorphic? Females and males look so much alike that it's difficult to sex them unless you personally watch one lay an egg (and even then bird genes are delightfully unpredictable). Just another awesome vulture fact I learned from the raptor centre insta.
Further, condors (aka Really Big Vultures) can reproduce via parthenogenesis. Here are some excellent queer bird stickers. I have ordered the asexual condor and the trans kookaburra.

Feb. 24th, 2026 09:32 pmI'm pretty worried about Blair.
She gets migraines from time to time; bad enough, and frequently enough, that she has a prescription medication for migraine medicine. Lately, though, she has been getting them almost every day, and that is... not good, and not normal. She's completely taken out by the migraine and then completely taken out in a different way by the medicine she has to take to treat it.
She's going to try to work with her doctor to figure out what's happening and what to do about it, and in the meantime, she's going to take a week-long leave of absence from school and work. What I'm worried most about is the knowledge that she has (has had, for a few years now) a small brain tumor. So far as they know it's benign and she's been on prolactin to shrink it (which is working). Still.
Worried.
On a completely different note, does anyone here use the Finch app? Let me know if you do, so we can be friends!

Feb. 22nd, 2026 08:59 pmIt did, in fact, snow a good nine or ten inches!
Blair's birthday party was a nice time. A bunch of family and a large group of her friends all converged on her parents' house for food, board games, and karaoke. To my relief, no one got drunk except for her father (who is always drunk), and her sister (who was downstairs singing the whole time anyway). Everyone got along great, and we came home with tons of tupperware full of food (which is great, because our fridge was empty.).
Today, we drove the hour or so to Rochester and had brunch at this amazing Dutch place called Hollandberry. The food was amazing and we are already eager to return sooner rather than later. We also hit up Trader Joe's, which we try to do once every one or two months, and came home with an enormous haul.
Watched a bit of the Olympics figure skating Gala while Blair napped (she's been plagued with migraines lately), and now we're playing DnD! Not a bad weekend, at all. So far as I know, there is nothing more on the horizon, really. We're in for a pretty calm, uneventful March. I'm not really complaining about that.
Maybe, if the creative feeling persists, I'll start writing something.

Feb. 20th, 2026 02:11 amWow, it is DUMPING down snow out there! It's been so warm, in the high fifties and into the sixties, but now it's snowing heavily, we're being urged not to go anywhere if we don't have to, and we are looking at maybe having nine inches by morning. I'm no snow expert, given my Southern Californian origins, but I feel like that's a fair bit.
Still trying to watch as much of the Olympics as I have time for, though Peacock is really pissing me off by regularly pulling events down only after a few days, sometimes right as I'm in the middle of watching them. I heard it has something to do with music copyright, but like? It's the Olympics, and you're a major network, you can figure out how to do this? It's incredibly frustrating, having to hunt down each individual pair's free skate on youtube when they're all sliced up and in terrible quality!
Still, I'm trying to enjoy it (I am enjoying it) even though I'm always behind and constantly being spoiled because if I know which teams are playing in the next game then I obviously know who won the last one and don't need to watch it now, do I?
Our fish, Kyber, got sick. His fins were all torn and in some places missing altogether, and while I don't know for certain if he was self-mutilating or if he's got fin rot, I responded by buying him an entirely new tank as well as new, very soft decor and some real live Indian almond leaves that are supposed to have wonderful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, as well as provide shelter, entertainment, and a more natural hue of water for the little guys. He seems happier, more energetic, and brighter in color since we made the changes a few nights ago.
I took Velma in to a local groomer to get her nails trimmed today, and another customer there had a Xoloitzcuintle, which was very cool because it's somewhat of a rare breed (at least here) and I'd never seen one in person before.
Although I'm feeling very burned out by the stress and anxiety I experienced over writing my piece for Fandom Trumps Hate, I've found some inspiration in the Olympics and I think there might be something I'd like to write for me, which is almost unheard of. I grew up in the world of ice sports (my mother was a competitive figure skater when she was younger, and later, a coach; I spent many a summer in the rink around figure skaters and hockey players), so it's something I definitely know pretty intimately. Could be fun. I guess we'll see!
