Having seen Picard as "Firefly Season 2" and now being unable to not see it, I spent all episode identifying the characters: Formerly idealistic soldier who is now a cynical captain on a biddy boat for hire (Rios/Mal); the hilarious badass pilot (Rios hologram/Wash); loyal bamf second-officer who is constantly frustrated by her CO but will still move heaven and earth to save his ass (Zoe/Raffi); innocent doctor who is in WAY over their head (Simon/Agnes); super-powered waif (River/Soji); the narc who is after her (Narek/The Operative LOOK THEY EVEN JUST SPELLED "Narc" WEIRD OKAY); the former powerful member of the current government who is now on the outs and also a spiritual mission (Book/Picard); the scary merc (Seven/Jayne).

Oh! and Super sinister government assassins: Tal Shiar/Blue Sun Company.

And I guess this leaves Elnor as the super-cute Mary Sue we all wanna be??? I mean.... tragic backstory, total bamf, kiiiiiiiinda adopted by Picard, always the prettiest.... It checks out.

THIS IS THE BEST AU EVER, Y'ALL!

Prompted by recently reading somewhere negative commentary on the Wonder Woman film because her power was love and compassion. Also ass-kicking, but also love. And right now I'm rereading Tamora Pierce's Alanna books and reading for the first time her Protector of the Small books, all of which involve girls wanting to be knights and performing heroics. But all of their heroics are centered around martial arts and what we would consider traditional bravery in terms of standing up to bullies, fighting literal monsters, and so on.

And what struck me is how we kind of have this narrative of heroism = violence, and therefore women heroes have to either 1) be born warriors (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Wonder Woman), 2) be traumatized and become warriors (Jessica Jones, River Tam), or 3) choose to be warriors For Reasons (Agent Carter, Gabrielle from Xena), etc.

But like, there isn't much of a narrative for non-fightey heroics?

And then on the flip-side, slightly, you get stuff like Pacific Rim that does switch it up, with Raleigh being the emotional nurturing one, and Mako being the Traumatized and Opting for Warrior one.

And so I guess my main thought is to wonder: What does a non-fightey woman hero look like? Is she possible?

So we got the internet today (YAY); we're partially settled into the new apartment, with a lot unpacked and a lot still scattered around all higgeldy-piggeldy. The apartment is small so one of my tasks as I've been unpacking is identifying stuff that can go into our storage unit at the complex, while also trying to bring order to....everything else. Which, considering it's a mixture of my stuff from Texas and Scott's stuff from Atlanta means easy culls (we need one toaster and one iron, not two of each) and more problematic ones (the spice racks: augh).

I'm still studying for my language exam next week and alternate between feeling pretty good about it and freaking out. Because I am a spaz.

Anyway, in a fit of pique I tried writing a little bit and ended up with a scene between Jim Kirk and River Tam, for some unplanned post-STID crossover (no idea if it ties into the previous crossover or not). Anyways, for kicks, here you are:

Just so that I can make ice planets on sticks!

You guys agree with this, yes?

BTW the same blog has a recipe for homemade marshmallows!

Now check out this fanvid of a guy and himself doing a medley of tv themes. It's kinda mad briliant and also kinda scary. It also certifies in my mind that identifying themes is the bestest game ever.

Well, only the "going to Georgia" part.

I finally got the crap virus that's been going around, and rather than spend the next few days traveling AND hacking up uckiness (amongst other things), we figured the better part of valor was to just exchange our Christmas plane tickets for Easter ones and for me to stay in bed, or at least the couch.

So now I'm making the rounds of calls while Scott goes for more o.j.

Well, here's something seasonal anyhow.

So Browncoat Ball was pretty fun. There were maybe a hundred people at the whole event. Scott and I went to the programs on tai chi, filk circle, and fight choreography.

In fight choreography everyone got to pick up a wooden sword or hatchet and learn a set of basic moves. The instructors were really awesome guys and were very good with everyone, which was amazing as they had everyone there from people who just wanted to have fun but were pretty nervous (like me) about hitting other people to the people who just wanted to "win"--even when there was nothing to win. They apparently train actors for local theater and choreograph fight sequences for plays and the like, so they really knew what they were doing.

My favorite event was the filk circle with the Bedlam Bards. A few people also brought instruments and everyone got to sing.

At the actual shindig it was interesting to see who went western versus eastern. Interestingly most people went with Western, even though most attendees weren't local. Everyone really went all out and so many of the costumes were just dead-on Firefly outfits. We left early because we were bored--saris aren't really friendly to fast line dances which was what they were mostly doing, and Scott was bored because we didn't have anyone else to talk to.

One thing that did surprise me was how boring and uptight a lot of the attendees were. Which sounds mean, and I guess it is, but I've never been to a con where everyone was so serious about everything. There was a "heist" game where each table had to steal nick-nacks from other tables--it was sort of a role-play thing, with "Alliance officers" inspecting your papers and ocassionally confiscating "contraband" items. A number of people copped a 'tude about playing along--it was weird. Most Browncoats I've met were happy-go-lucky so I'm not certain what was going on there--I don't think seriousness is a symptom of the fandom in particular, in other words.

At any rate we largely enjoyed ourselves, and now we're back home and the furbabies are happy we're home.

Alright, Browncoats! Who's going?

Scott and I are doing a Firefly-themed wedding. His family is non-too-thrilled, cos, well, they're stuck up in multiple ways. However it does cheer me to think of their faces when they realize they'll be stuck for several hours in a room largely filled with Southerners saying things like "We will rise again, gorrammit!"

We've decided to go with Scott as Mal and me as Inara. I've found a pretty red wedding sari that's very Inara-like (and at a fraction of the dresses I was looking at), and so far we've tracked down a proper browncoat, gunfighter trousers and suspenders, and Mal's gun replica.

Anyhow, here's this for some inspirational feeling, like:

I actually like this song sufficiently to ask Scott if he wants to do a dance to it... (Cos really, can you imagine the faces of the folks from New Jersey, New York, and Maine while it plays? I mean, really?)
