From Bradley Denton:

So, for six muffins: Preheat oven to 375F. In a big ol' bowl, mix about 1.5 cups self-rising flour, a fistful (or so) of brown sugar, a fistful (or so) of chocolate chips, and 6 to 8 ounces of Shiner Chocolate Stout. Mix to a medium-thick batter and taste, adjusting ingredients as desired. Spoon into greased muffin tins (I use cooking spray), then bake for 30-35 minutes. (These were in for 32.) Remove from muffin tins and cool on baking rack until you can't hold out any longer.

I'm working with bone tools and bear skins, I swear to fucking God!

...Okay maybe it's more of a Bones moment.

I'm tired. And the first batch of cakes aren't out yet.

In Better news, I hope, Alleria will be coming back to Texas next week.

....

Oh God, Scott just declared that recipes are for the week.

...Right, apologies in advance to everyone coming tonight. And uh to everyone else? Stop laughing, I can hear you!

End of semester + job offer for the boy = PAR-TAY

The evening is best summarized by this quote from a friend: "Good food, entertainment, and pictures of hot actors giving microphones blow jobs. Where else can I get all that?" :D

Just so that I can make ice planets on sticks!

You guys agree with this, yes?

BTW the same blog has a recipe for homemade marshmallows!

Now check out this fanvid of a guy and himself doing a medley of tv themes. It's kinda mad briliant and also kinda scary. It also certifies in my mind that identifying themes is the bestest game ever.

The local Blockbuster is going under and closing shop, so Scott and I stopped by to to see if there were any of the advertised $4 films that appealed to us....

Yup. Watchmen? Check. Bottle Shock? Check. X-Men 2? Check. Etc. We got about fourteen DVDs in all. Happy Christmas to us, early.

Speaking of Christmas, 100wordspermin again proves herself one of the bestest friends ever as she got Neil Gaiman to sign a copy of Odd and the Frost Giants for me. I am baking her whatever the hell she wants for Xmas!!!!!!!!

Speaking of baking, we're having a Goodie Day at work tomorrow since people have already started leaving for holidays, so we'll have a proper holiday party in January. So I'm making cupcakes, the recipe for which a friend of a friend provided me. Basically, mix up devil's food cake mix, chocolate pudding mix, eggs, vegetable oil, sour cream, instant coffee (or coffee liqueur--in my case two packets of Via) and chocolate chips, and you have obscenely moist goodness. The batter is so thick you can basically just dump a large wobbelly spoon of the stuff into a liner and have done. All to be sprinkled with powdered sugar, and voila, chocolatey goodness. They should be out in half an hour. The house smells AWESOME.

ETA: To make my geeker joy complete, the existence of an Earth-like planet has been confirmed. I don't care of the temperature is something like five hundred degrees, I wanna go there!!!!!!

I love Halloween. I really really do. We were running errands this morning and all of a sudden there are pumpkins, black cats, bats, and all manner of things orange, black, and green about.

This being the short way of saying: Scott had to keep prodding me away from things. Except at World Market, cos, hey, who can resist "Zombie Zin" wine or bat pasta with artichoke sauce? (Something I did have to resist: pirate towels. We don't need more towels. But they were so damn cute!!!)

Anyhow. We are in early stages of planning a party for Samhain. The pumpkin-clove cake from the CakeLove book is a must, I think. I need to find a butternut squash soup recipe.

(This is my way of avoiding thoughts of work.)

So we were bored this afternoon and were actually watching football and like the vultures in The Jungle Book asking each other what we wanted to do.

What we apparently wanted to do was go to the bookstore and behave. Then we didn't. Ahem.

So, I got:

-Daily Life in Medieval Times (Pretty pictures!)
-The Best American Essays of the Century (Cheap and educational!)
-Lone Star: The History of Texas and Texans (Because I have to give back the library copy some time but I'm not going to be done with it any time soon.)
-The Book of Ballads (Because Neil Gaiman is in it!)
-Who Killed Chaucer? (It's by that Terry Jones.)
-Cosette, The Sequel to Les Miserables (Who knew?! --Not by Hugo though.)

Scott got:

-A Charlie Brown Christmas CD (For Xmas purposes!)
-The Bonesetter's Daughter (He's an Amy Tan fan.)
-Rise to Rebellion (We don't have enough Shaara novels.)
-The Glorious Cause (See previous.)
-Native Son (He likes literature.)
-Great Battles: Decisive Conflicts That Have Changed History (Oversized and with lots of maps. He is overjoyed at this one.)

Melanie got:

-Nightshade: 20th Century Ghost Stories (Because Halloween is approaching!)

So yeah. We behaved. *coff*
*Disclaimer: This was at Half-Price Books, so in fairness we did make out like utter bandits with these.

Then we came home and decided that we really wanted to make cupcakes. So out came the CakeLove book. We made the Cherry Chocolate Cupcakes with vanilla buttercream meringue. Tasty but the cake was a bit sweeter than we were expecting.

Anyhow, we're all ready for another week.

On a whim Scott and I had a Spanish Samurai party last night that was a lot of fun. Basically we called a gang of our friends, cooked tapas, and watched Rashomon and The Hidden Blade. I finally got to make a few dishes from 1080 Recipes, which is basically the Spanish equivilant of The Joy of Cooking. Tasty tasty!

Anyhow, I'm being kept uber-busy at work so expect short posts for a while.

If you're not mushy, check out these lovely pseudo-political tees. Honestly? Kinda want 'em all.

You can also votes as to what real politician you think is a Cylon over here. My money's on McCain.

In other news, per K's wise perceptions, I ordered Warren Brown's CakeLove: How to Bake Cakes From Scratch and absolutely can not wait for it to come in the mail.

Y'know what I want to make? Vanilla cupcakes with matcha icing. Whatcha think?

Details here. It sounds funny as hell.

~~

Berry buttercream cupcakes came out okay. The problem was the kitchen was so hot with the other cooking going on that the butter and the sugar stuff tried to separate and was very runny despite being put in fridge for a while. Once the cupcakes were iced and in the fridge for a few hours during the dinner they were fine.

The biggest hit was the fried pumpkin and yogurt sauce which we will definitely have to make again.
