caitri: (that right there awesome)
*hops on couch* I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do, I really really do. I love Anton Yelchin and I REALLY love David Tennant and I love how Colin Farrel was sexy and squicky and terrifying by turns.

One of my many favorite things about this film, though, was how aptly it addresses the issue that always seems to come up when you watch horror films. "Y'know, if they had any sense they would...." ALL of the (main) characters are smart and do logical things throughout. In particular, the endgame is just so brilliant.

With a screenplay by Marty Noxon, the female characters were largely well done, but there were still some gender issues. Not once but twice does the murderous vampire get a pass from onlookers because "it looks like lady is havin' a good time." That said, I did have a bit of a problem with the mom and girlfriend falling into the "we'll do what he says" mindset pretty quickly.

Mostly, I kept thinking of how awesome this would be if Anton was Chekov and Amy was Sulu and Peter Vincent was Kirk, because I am a huge, huge, obsessed dork that way. So.

Anyhow. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! (And yes, there are multiple Twilight jokes and they are all funny.)

Coming to the conclusion that the following are necessary ground rules for civil discussion:

1) If there are books, they need to be read. (This includes Dracula. Like seriously, SO many people cite Stoker without having read him or having read him in a loooooooooong time.)

2) Keep the straight boys outside. They get too pissy otherwise. (sub-thought: Why do straight guys get themselves so worked up? Is it the displacement of traditional norms: popular female writers, female gaze, female community--hell, the concept of female control in popular culture?) For whatever reason, the gay guys are civil and non-derogatory.

So generally I don't like extended parodies, but my friend Candy and I went for research purposes. *coff* (What? It's true. We need it for our vampires class.)

More than once I laughed so hard I cried. It's not as disgustingly raunchy as so many of these things often are, and it references so many of the popular vampire trends in pop culture so it's just this really great snapshot of pop culture in 2010.

Anyway, I hosted Word Wars last night and got a fair bit of writing done. I think I've solved the problems I was working through with the LOTR fic o' (Mt.) Doom so I'm less freaked out. And the Cupid plot bunny has bit me and I hope I might finish that this weekend.

Builds very much on Twilight, True Blood, and Buffy. Also, Stefan appears to have stolen Mick St. John's ring (although I did not know it had sunlight protection powers)

Buffy:

-High School is so HARD
-highschoolers have ISSUES
-supernatural shenanigans as metaphors

Twilight:

-disaffected teenage protagonist (hereafter DTP) with issues
-stolid jock would-be love interest who is so totally not even in the running
-vampires can hang out during the day (or at least they can with a ring--which was also a brief plot point for Spike on Buffy and Angel)
-an unintentionally laughable "OMG WTF?!" reaction scene from the high schoolers of the DTP with the vampire hottie

True Blood:

-Southern goth excessiveness
-alcoholism/drug abuse for humans as relates to blood for vamps
-African-American girlfriend BFF
-Civil War obsession

Twilight and True Blood and Buffy:

-two hot supernatural love interests
-vamps need invites to come inside a human's house (I particularly alike that it's clear this is what's going on but they don't discuss it in the pilot, because at this point all of us have seen either Buffy, Twilight, or True Blood)
-lots of nature scenes (vampires are....organic???)

Anyhow, color this mediocre so far. It tries, it really does, but it's not smart like Buffy or Trueblood, or earnestly earnest (yup, that's what I meant to writer, earnestly earnest) like Twilight. Will stay tuned with all my snark factor.

(Btw, the books of Vampire Diaries make Twilight look like fuckin' Shakespeare.
