Book Review: Big Boned by Meg Cabot
Dec. 8th, 2007 10:58 pmSo I just finished Cabot's latest adult release, which was an easy afternoon read. It's the third in her Heather Wells mystery series, and I was slightly disappointed.
First off, it's just not as funny as the others in the series, I suppose because by now the running gag has run rather, uh, thin. Don't get me wrong, I like having a heroine who is not a pencil. It makes a nice change. But we get it by now, the girl likes her mochas with the extra extra whipped cream, and dislikes exercise. But the joke through the first half of the book is when she goes running and is afraid her uterus falls out. Um?? Lacking the funny there.
Second of all, the mystery isn't very compelling either: another death in the nicknamed "Death Dorm" and administrative shenanigans ensue (along with striking grad students). Repetitive much?
Lastly, I disliked the speed with which the love interests finally hook up. The tension was drawn out through books one and two and it's only in the last chapter that they hook up. And it's basically a "why yes, we've always loved each other, let's plan on eloping before we even go out on our FIRST DATE!" No. Just...no.
It's overall a fun read but not as good as the other two books. Cabot had been saying that was the conclusion of that series as she's moved on to a new publisher, but recently she's saying she may plan another book. Meh. Hope it's funnier.
