Still thinking about the deleted Cap scene from Avengers which breaks my nerdy little heart (ALL OF THE HUGS FOR STEVE, ALL OF THEM), and then got bitten by the plot bunny:
Okay, so Steve spends ALL THIS TIME wanting to go back "home" to the 1940s, right? He keeps thinking about what he'd tell Bucky (and then remembering that Bucky is STILL dead, back then) and Peggy and the gang about this weird future where men on the street want to sell you minutes and time (oh god I LOVED that little detail as he walks past the hawkers of cellphones), and Howard has a kid who is OLDER than they are, etc etc. He keeps up this running commentary of everything he wants to remember to tell them (and how he thinks they'd react) for ages, right?
And then, little by little, he stops, because he makes his peace and Tony is his best friend-kinda boyfriend and the Avengers are his family and it's all pretty awesome. Time goes by.
And THEN they're fighting the baddy of the day who...sends Steve back in time somehow. He just wakes up and there he is in his sleeping roll, Bucky toeing him awake because it's time to get up, sunshine, they've got a long way to go to the rendeveux point, and Gabe and Dernier are trading banter in French and Falsworth is on guard duty, etc etc. And Bucky's like, What's the matter with you, Rogers? and Steve's like ...Really weird dream, and...everything is back to what it was, they're running missions, etc., but Steve can't shake the feeling that this isn't right. And he's like half ecstatic that he has Bucky and Peggy and everyone back but he also completely misses Tony and the Avengers, etc.
ALL OF THE ANGST OKAY.
And then they are on a mission and it turns out that HYDRA has a time displacement mathingy that somehow ties in with what 21st century baddie had, and...Steve has to make a choice. Stay in the 1940s (and risk effecting the time line, of course he's thinking about that, it's not like he hasn't watched enough Star Trek with Clint and Bruce to know that is an Issue) or go back to 2012.
Bucky is the one that makes him go back to Tony, because ALL OF THE BEAUTIFUL TEARS.
And then he gets home and it's happy ever after because hey, closure, finally.

This counts as having written the damn thing, right? TITLE: BUYING TIME. So there.
