A Book a Day: Smoke and Mirrors
May. 23rd, 2020 05:12 pm Every day I'm posting an image of a book I like. Here's one of my faves in its ca. 2000 glory. This is peak Gaiman, all short stories, and every one a model of economy and control. Later Gaiman spins out a bit (American Gods has some beautiful sequences and also some parts where everything just. stops.), and Gaiman post 2010 is trying to reclaim the edginess of his youth in problematic ways (see Trigger Warning where it's clear he demonstrates his misunderstanding of the term). It's telling that most of the stories here have reappeared since as heavily-illustrated individual books, that's how good they are.
