I finished S3 and am at the beginning of S4.

I remembered S3 being a lot better than it was. There were a few good episodes-- The Xmas Special, "Jus in Bello", "Mystery Spot", and "Ghostfacers". But there was a lot of dumb monsters-of-the-week (and I swear every third ep there's a creepy child plot, which makes the joking reference to it in S5 so much funnier), and Lilith was introduced way later than I thought. I also remembered being intrigued by Bela Talbot and always half-expecting she would show up again, but this time--she really was a problematic antagonist; when Dean hangs up on her right before the Hellhounds come, I didn't feel sad for her this time.

S4.1 "Lazarus Rising" on the other hand was just as good as I remember. The narrative tension holds throughout the episode, setting up Dean's rescue from Hell as a truly ominous event. And then Castiel appears, literal saving grace--only to reveal that "there's work to do." Chills up my spine, man.

For kicks I decided to go look up the original S4 promo, just to see if they advertised Cas or not. They didn't, and they also set it up as a truly bad cheeseball "war between good and evil" that looks like bad History Channel Bible documentaries ca. 2003. Ouch.
