Lady Sylvanas: In Memoriam

caitriOur beloved cat Lady Sylvanas, the Banshee Queen, Ruler of the Undercity (Basement) died this weekend. She was 16. We had taken her to the vet earlier this week because she was doing poorly; the vet said she probably had cancer, and it would cost $5k to operate and confirm, and we said no, because 16. Friday night she was hiding and I felt alarm. She died early Saturday and Scott found her body in the morning, back arched in her favorite stretch, eyes wide open. I hope she saw something beautiful. It hurts my heart to think she died alone without us there, even if she wanted it that way.
She was such a great cat. We adopted her when we moved to Texas; she was so playful, and at first we thought she'd be my cat, but rapidly she became Scott's cat--and he wasn't a cat person at all. She was so so playful, and you could hold her in any way and she'd just trust you and go with it. There was one time Scott's young cousins came and they played with her until she was panting like a dog, and she excitedly kept going.
She was a brat queen and bullied our other cat, Varamathras. I remember one time she got mad at him that he wasn't offended by our dog Bilbo and she slapped the back of his head.
Another time she wanted Scott's attention and she would bat his mini figs to the floor with her paw.
She was incredibly talkative and demanding. She had soft, soft fur like a rabbit.
Tonight I was cleaning and found a ball of her fur from when we had brushed her recently. I just started ugly crying again and then put it in a box because I can't bear to get rid of it yet. We aren't going to keep her ashes or anything; we're going to just frame a picture of her and keep it on the mantel. We were frustrated by how few pics of her we actually have--mostly because when she was with us she'd be wanting attention rather than posing, I think.
What a shitty, shitty start to the new year.
