This is easily one of the most irritating books I've ever read in my life: sloppily researched, badly written, and ostensibly written by a geek for geeks. The thesis is supposed to be out the increasing complexity of popular culture. In reality it is a handful of anecdotes gathered from newspapers. What irritated me the most was his discussion of the Star Wars and LOTR trilogies, making the case that LOTR is more complex. Okay, no argument. The way he chooses to do this, however, is by listing the main characters from each film--which he does by COPYING AND PASTING THE LISTS DIRECTLY FROM IMDB.COM WITHOUT CREDIT. The problem with this? The LOTR cast is listed alphabetically, meaning he would have us believe Everard Proudfoot is the hero of LOTR and Frodo Baggins is the least important character!

Grr.

In other news, the garden we really wanted to have the wedding at is unsure of whether they want to book anything for 2008 yet (since we're moving we have to have EVERYTHING booked by July at the latest). Grr again.
