I'm in a mood this morning. I slept better last night but still nothing in the way of real rest.

I keep thinking things through and what it means to be this or that. I think about what it means to be yourself and subsequently is that even possible? William James, one of the founders of modern psychology (and yes you now know that if this entry is to be about psychology then it is written by a psychotic and you had best just run away NOW), wrote an essay called "The Social Me." Like so many nineteenth century authors, he wrote a lot about the obvious. Much as Darwin wrote about how different birds have different beaks, James wrote about how people's behavior changes with each person they are with, i.e. you would never act in the same way with your parent, your best friend, or your lover.

Therefore is it ever possible to truly be yourself when you are with someone else? And how do you know? And how do they?
