Review: The Last Airbender, or, Damn You, M. Night Shamalamadingdong!

I went into The Last Airbender with low expectations.

They were not met.

Actual dialogue from the film: "We need to believe our believes as strongly as they believe their beliefs!"

Afterwards:

Me: I can't believe they made Zhao lame! LAME!
Kristin: And Iroh was strangely Spanish.
Me: Ozai killed his Father, prepare to die?
Kristin: Zuko didn't have a scar, he had a sunburn!
Me: And he was emo, but like Peter Petrelli-emo.
Kristin: He was angry at the world, but in a lock-myself-in-my-room-and-listen-to-nothing-but-The-White-Stripes kinda way.
Me: They did like four episodes! All they had to do was highlight stuff that had already been written and just do that!
Kristin: Lookit this way. Nothing you write will ever be that bad.
Me: Er, yay?

Soooo speaking of writing, I'm thinking fo rewriting Common Grounds and Gatherings of Leaves as original fic. I printed out an expurgated version for my friend Todd, whose response was "Shit, this sucker's long!" (He seems to think I write more porn than I do. I'm not sure why.)

I'm also having some writer's block issues with my WIPs, my STBB in particular. I've written nothing of significance in weeks and this irks me. Grr. Suggestions, anybody?

I'm not familiar with the TV series, but all I hear about this movie is bad reviews... It's really THAT bad?
Is there a point to see it even if it's only for the special effect? :)

I'd say if you can manage to see it for less than $3, that would be worth it. More than that, not so much. The best thing about the film was the sets, so I'm not sure how you feel about a city of pagodas in the Arctic as far as special effects go. I also saw it in 3D which apparently made everything even blurrier, so maybe if you see it 2D it will look better.

What I'd really recommend is go watch the series, which is on Instant Download from Netflix. It has really great writing, characterization, humor mixed with angst, etc. (Honestly I have a plot bunny to do AOS as Avatar the Last Airbender, cos Aang=Jim, Kataara=Bones, and Zuko=Spock incredibly well. For serious.)

When I have writers block, I tend to just grab a note book and my favorite drink and put on a cd and write what ever comes to mind. No mater how stupid it is, just to get the juices going again.

Or I text friends and tell them to give me five words and base a story off the five words they give me.

Well, the weird thing is it's like partial block. Like I'll get a couple paragraphs or a vignette or something, and it's fine, but then when it comes to placing it in a larger context? Brain blank. Like last week I kicked out maybe 250-300 words of Jocelyn being clueless about Jim and Bones, and it was nice and it worked, but what to dowith it, y'know??

One of my friends points out that I'm just spoiled on my writing run of the last few months, and that normally people DON'T start and finish fics in a space of days or weeks. Grr realism. So. I'm hoping actual down time will help. :/
