Er, yeah. So in addition to being in an awkward last-minute placement AND at 8:30 in the morning on a Saturday, my Ever So Helpful Chair (Snort!) didn't inform the other panelists I'd be on there as well. So there was this whole thing where I go in and the other three people are sitting there and then I sit down, and one of them is like "I thought there were only three papers on this panel!" and another is like "Yeah, I did too!" and the Chair is sitting there all awkward going, "Uh, yeah, there was an error on my part, and there's four papers now." And they're all, "Oh."

Like seriously. I had refrained from coffee and had promised myself to be on Good Behavior and all, so I just smiled pleasantly and was all "O hai." But wtf, people?

Once it actually got going though, my talk went very well, I thought. For one thing, I woke people up (I know because I could see, being in front of the room and all), and people chuckled at my jokes, and I got several questions and comments. Which also led to some frozen smiles in the hallway afterwards from the erstwhile Mean Girls.

Then I went to a Star Trek panel, and it was fun and interesting. I'm going to go for coffee in a bit, and Candy and I were contemplating going to hunt for a bookstore, but it's all drizzly and gray outside so we'll see.

Alas, the coffee stand had closed when I got there, because it was Saturday. PEOPLE NEED CAFFEINE ON SATURDAYS, DANGIT!

I'm a bamf like that. Hey you need to tell me how your interview went--I've been so addled and it only occured to me yesterday you never told me how that went?

Ahh Academic life where acting like a teenager still happens :p

Would love to hear about the ST panel later. It's grey and drizzly here too, which is so annoying after we were earlier teased with summer this week. :(

Let's see, one talk was on reboot vs. TOS and how Abrams transformed the cooperative friendly relationship of K/S to a competitive alpha-male one. Also addressed the mysogyny etc. Another reboot talk discussed slash and Foucault. There was a talk about ST: First Contact as a kind of revisionist history/colonialist narrative. And then there was a talk about the Doctor from Voyager's awareness and defense of self and identity. It was a good panel!

Oh, that's it! I knew that new-Spock was off, but the whole alpha-male thing is precisely why. I much prefer the "really, I'm above all of that nonsense (except when I'm not)" style Spock.

I'm not sure that you mentioned it, but what was your topic? (I'm getting some kind of mid-semester addling that will hopefully(!) be cured by Thanksgiving break.)

My paper was on queer vamps in film from 1994-2010. And I can't wait for break, this semester has been nuts!!!! Scott and I are going to go to SF. Are you guys going to be in Chicago?

I was, briefly, quite confused by this- Queer Vamps & Star Trek? Then I realized that they were two distinct panels. What film did you cover? The Hunger is too early for that period, but maybe Let The Right One In?

For Thanksgiving break, Jim will be in Europe! (I will not. But I'll see some drivably local friends.) For Winter break, we'll be in PA and MA, and at the end I'll be conferring in New Orleans. Very Busy! Our classes start ridiculously early this year, so I'll probably be planning for the spring over Thanksgiving.

Let's see, I referenced Interview with the Vampire, Queen of the Damned, Dracula 2000, Buffy and Angel, True Blood, and Twilight. And then a few earlier films for historic grounding like A Fool There Was and The Vampire Lovers. :)

Oh and New Orleans will be fun! I still haven't been there. I need to fix that some time.
