jim_and_bones. Leonard comms Jocelyn with some surprising news.
When Jocelyn gets the subspace communication from Starfleet, she's expecting the worst.
"Leonard!" He looks unharmed, at least, mouth set tight in that way he has when he's nervous about something. "What's going on, what's the matter?"
Leonard coughs, looking hesitant. "Hi, Joce," he says slowly. "It's, um, well--" He stumbles. Someone says something just offscreen, inaudible to the comm equipment, and Leonard glares at them. "I'm getting to it, now shut up and let me talk, you damn fool boy." More inaudible words and something that sounds suspiciously like laughter. Leonard flushes, looking at her again. "I'm sorry, I don't have much time here--I wasn't expecting this and I used most of my comm time for JoJo's birthday last month."
"I know." Jocelyn smiles gently. The two of them had talked over an hour, then. Joanna had just turned ten and the McCoys always had this "tradition" about double-digit milestone birthdays. "Jo's still in school--I'm surprised you even commed--"
Her ex-husband nods. "That's the thing," he says, "I felt--I owed it to you to talk to you first before I talked to her. It's only fair." He takes a deep breath. "Joce, I'm getting married again."
She feels her face freeze in its pleasant smile. "Oh really," she says, words tumbling out of her mouth like stones. "How--nice."
"Hi, Jocelyn!" Jim Kirk pops into the view of the vidscreen, grinning that too-wide smile of his, too many teeth showing. Somehow she can't find herself to be surprised, not with the way the man has followed Leonard around like an overeager puppy for--what, five years now? "Bones is finally letting me make an honest man of him!"
"Lovely," she hears herself say. "Any plans yet?"
Leonard looks hesitantly relieved, that small, private smile of his she used to know so well--dammit, that she used to be the cause of--blooming over his face like a flower. "We're thinking Earth, next shore leave home--about a year from now."
"JoJo should be the flowergirl," Kirk jumps in. He claps Leonard on the back. He's always touching Leonard; she'd noticed that from the first. Staking his claim like we're all still apes in the bushes or something. "Or Girl of Honor or something?"
She feels herself nod and smile. "I'm sure she'd be delighted."
Leonard nods, turns and whispers something to Kirk, who nods back. "I've gotta go," Kirk tells her. "Nice talking to you again." The hell you say. And then he's gone, and it's the two of them.
"It had to happen sometime, Joce," Leonard starts, but she cuts him off.
"I know," she says. "I know--I'm happy for you." She manages a smile, a fraction of her old sunny beam she knows used to melt him like butter. "Really. Happy."
She's not sure if he really believes her, but he pretends to. "I'm glad," he says. "Look, I've got to go--tell JoJo our comm in two weeks will be a little shorter than usual, but don't tell her why, okay? Jim and I want to tell her together." Another of those too rare smiles--well, too rare until Jim Kirk, anyway--blossoms over his features. "I think she'll like being in the wedding."
"Yeah, yeah she will. I'm sure of it. Bye, Leonard." And she closes the comm, and sits back in the leather chair of her posh office, and tries not to think of how she'll go home to Clay tonight and they'll argue again, or worse, not talk, and she'll make herself remember why leaving Leonard McCoy was the best thing she ever did. Dammit.
