Ok, so despite the fact that I swore to not do it, I caved and got the new reboot novel, The Edge. It's so much better than the first book, but even better, there's a scene where the boys look at each other and Uhura and the OFC are all, what was that? McCoy responds that Kirk is just so dreamy. *_*

Right, this is officially my new favorite tie-in novel. The end.

ETA Kirk just admitted to doing a Stupid Thing for Bones.

Okay, I bought the ebook, I officially now need the hard copy.

I LOVED that scene! I'm sad though that the next book coming out isn't by the same author. They did such a better job.

OMG I have to finish it now. Because started it and couldn't finish it. I was just like what the fuck is this.

I stopped reading after Uhura was studying in the library.

This was supposed to be the first book in this new series I can see why it got pushed to second. I am not really digging the girl Jim is with in this one. I bet she's on teh drugz oh noes.

I actually really really liked this one--WAY more so than the last. The OFC develops a bit better later on, but the problem with the series as a whole is they don't want to get into other canon characters too much because of the movies, so they are stuck with OCs that we just aren't going to care about/get invested in, which is too bad really.

Now imagine if Monica had been Janice Rand or Janice Lester or some such...would have been SO. Much. Better!!

It would have been a lot better, but I see your point in them being stuck. After the next movie (which just finished the writing stage) I can see the books getting better, maybe. I'll dig it out again after finals are over.

Sooo much Film history reading to go through before I final arrrg. I can feel my brain frying from it.

But seriously I did a spit take when I read this post... Bones saying dreamy. LoL

I really think they are I felt that way in the first book too. Either that or they are just hiring fandom writers and saying here right a trek book, but it has to be het.

But the secretly I think I liked the girl in book one because she had blue hair and with to SFSU... who else has blue hair and goes to SFSU? *points at self* lolololol I had issues with her being stupid later but what eves.

Well there were huge, inexplicable gender issues with that book. I couldn't get over that the "top" teams had no chicks whatsoever. WTELF? TOS had more chicks than that book did!!!!

I know. That bugged me too. I was just watching the Animated Series the other day with my nephew and Uhura takes command in one and ep, and it's an all female rescue team. I didn't really understand the lack of chicks in the teams.

It was very welcome to Starfleet we are a homoerotic male institution with no history of females doing well. Unless your name is Uhura, but then you just come off as a cold bitch.

Honestly I don't like the ReBoot of Uhura or how she is being played out in the books thus far. I liked her in the bar in the movie, but then she is just kind of a bitch through the rest of the flick, and it's like that in the books as well. I don't understand why she is getting played as a bitter she-monster.

See I don't think Uhura came off as a bitch in the film at all, and I don't think she really came off that way in the books either. I think she came off as someone who doesn't take shit--which, of course, I love. If someone gives her 'tude, she gives it right back. I thought her scenes with Spock were both sweet and wrenching when they needed to be, and--yeah, I love her. *happy sigh*

I want to see a lot more of the crew growing as a cohesive unit, because I think showing her as learning to trust and respect Kirk was really shortcircuited by the film: like, literally, everyone BUT her got to witness his awesome. All SHE got to see was him figuring out the attack and then being a douchenozzle to her bf/CO, before finally saving the day--and really, that was such a collective thing too.

See I liked the take no shit thing, but I still feel she came off as cold to anyone who tried to say anything to her, other then Spock. Which is why I took issue with her, as a person in the communications track you figure she would have more interpersonal skills, and the only time I saw her using those where with Spock.

But I do agree that the film just kind of glazes over her and Kirks issues. Even after he proves himself at the academy and on the ship she still seems to view him as just some dumb hick who hit on her in a bar.

Like I said I really liked her take no shit attitude but she still doesn't come across as a very pleasant person to me. Which I can see her becoming in the next film, but my beef is the only person we ever see her being nice to is Spock, her boyfriend, which I take issue with because as a smart women you figure she would have relationships outside him.

So while there where aspects of Uhura I liked, there where a bunch I didn't.

I wonder what book three will hold it comes out in July i pre-ordered it off Amazon to save some cash.
