Movie Review: Thor
May. 8th, 2011 11:33 pmOkay, first off let me say that the previews may as well have been my summer schedule. CONAN? Yes. X-MEN: FIRST CLASS? Oh God Yes. GREEN LANTERN? Yup. DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK? Wait, a horror movie written by GUILLERMO DEL TORO?! How did I not know about this?? Yes! COWBOYS VS ALIENS? Totally! CAPTAIN AMERICA? Oh H to the Y!
Now. Thor.
It made me squee so much. Also, it was written by J. Michael Stracinzinksy, and how did I not know this either? So, so much fun. Clever and self-aware but not mocking, standing on its own but still full of hat-tips to the greater Marvel universe. *happy sigh*
My only point of contention was the romance plot. Okay, our lady astrophysicist has every reason to fall head over heels for Thor: he's gorgeous, courtly, innocent in a puppy-dog sort of way, and totally badass. And the hammer is not his--Er. Never mind. But we're supposed to buy that Thor is smitten by her too, and though Chris Hemsworth sells the smitten, we're not really shown why. Soooo she picks up gorgeous hunks off the road and studies astrophysics. Yay? There could have been a hella lot more development there, and they only really needed a small scene or two to act as shorthand. So, grr, there.
I also loved Branagh's direction. There's lots of angled shots throughout to kind of give you the feel that as the heavens are out of balance, so too is Earth right now. And considering the number of lesser-knowns he was working with, he seemed to have given them all a good handle on their characters so that they were able to stand on their own with the heavyweights.
Let me just close with this (hat-tip to
tocourtdisaster):

Okay, after having the film I don't even have WORDS for how much I want this. Considering Thor's characterization throughout as an arrogant smartass who is nonetheless a great warrior and someone you'd totes want to have a beer with after, and then grows UP on top of that? I could TOTES see NuKirk as being a chip off the old block.
(This is my way of saying that as soon as I figure out how? I'm writing it. And lightning storms in space? TOTALLY MAKING EVEN MORE SENSE.)

Date: 2011-05-09 01:52 pm (UTC)I would love to read a "Thor and Kirk have a beer together" fic. I have this crackfic/comic plot bunny where Bruce Wayne, Adrian Veidt and Tony Stark all have dinner together, and it's totally disrupted by Talia Ducard...who has dated them all. I know I'm throwing a Marvel character into the DC universe there, but I don't care

Date: 2011-05-09 05:39 pm (UTC)I hope you're good with hyper chipmunks then, because I sat there going "EEEEE!" and clapping manically whenever I was geekily pleased. (Which, in this case, was a LOT!)

Date: 2011-05-16 10:15 pm (UTC)I had my dad read my paper, and he was like what the fuck, as well. My friend who is getting his masters, who I used to work on a newspaper with, where you know I won awards for my writing, was also what the fuck. It's because I didn't cite him or agree with his politics.
I am just glade I don't have to take another class with the dude, if I did I wouldn't be a happy camper. But I am happy that the Prof who loves my writing is teaching the Sci Fi and Cinema Class next semester.
But yeah Kirks face in your icon was pretty much mine.
