caitri: (Can't Talk Busy Getting Tenure)
[personal profile] caitri
So Monday was my first day as an Associate Professor. In my world, the only difference between being tenured and not being tenured involved the extra trip to go get a new ID. So.

Classes are keeping me BUSY. I'm actually relieved I don't have to teach a credit course this semester because I have no idea when I'd find the time to do prep work for it. My grad student friends are envious that I don't have to teach and I'm all BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA because we still have twenty-five classes already booked to come in this semester so it's not like I'm, y'know, chillin'.

I really like my Anglo Saxon class, but it's linguistics-heavy. My brain can wrap itself around the vocabulary and the conjugations ("he did go and say to her") but danged if I can always remember what they are called ("that was the, uh, past...accusative?"). Similarly when we're doing translation exercises, it'll go back and forth towards being easy and being completely undecipherable. I think part of my mental hiccup is from the textbook; all othr language courses I've been in they spoon-fed me grammar and vocabulary at the same time, whereas here we've memorized ALL THE GRAMMAR up front and now it's flipping back and forth to the glossary when we're reading. Which means that sometimes I can identify the stems to figure out what a word is (noun, verb, etc) and sometimes I....can't. Eg. I had a privately hilarious mistake last week from englum (thank goodness I didn't have to read out loud that turn) because I mixed up English and angel. In context, yeah, it makes WAY more sense for Adam to want to be like the angels than like the English, but STILL.

Queer Theory is...well, it's something. I'm just not that good with theory, I don't have too much patience with it, but it's required for my course distribution and Queer Theory is more brain friendly to me than, say, the Theory of Ennunciation or whatnot. SO. And my professor is the quintessential fabulously gay film studies professor. One friend who was taking the class with me dropped it because she found him just too acerbic and sardonic to bear. "Why do you think he's so bitter at life?" she wanted to know. I said, "Because he's the quintessential fabulously gay film studies professor....at Texas A&M?" I emailed him a few days ago because I want to do my big paper on Queering Captain America because...I'm me...and I haven't heard back yet. NGL Teaching faculty who take their time answering email drive me a little nuts. Sigh.

So needless to say I haven't written any fiction lately. My brain just feels worn down. I know things will be better when my course work is done...preparing for prelims seems so comparatively easy. I dunno. I need to email one of my professors about dissertation ideas.

So, yeah, how are you guys?

I am interested in it but it's so hyped at io9 and elsewhere that I'm slightly worried that it can't match what I hope to see at this point...

Ah, well I've seen one trailer so I'm not overstimulated quite yet! :)

lol, ngl, I'm so out of the loop (!) for things within my particular nerd idiom, it's not even funny. Especially this and next semester, if it doesn't directly apply to work and class, I'm SOL.

Past accusative: you stole. Present accusative: you are stealing. Future accusative: you will steal. Sort of like talking to a politician ;)

NICE.

BTW the prof has a nice little truism he got from his professor: "if you've been reading for a while and come across a word you don't recognize, it's probably another form of 'to attack.'"

I can see why you're worn out! Your Anglo Saxon class would have given me a brain bleed by now.

Well, y'know, I think it's fun because I'm a Tolkien geek, so when I'm reading it's like going back to LOTR at a slant. :)

Alllllllll the things!

And that Anglo-Saxon class does sound AWESOME, but I think I would be a puddle by now because of the grammer xD

It's funny because it goes back and forth between being ridiculously easy to SO HARD.

Example:

"He was a great and humble king" (and I think, Aw yeah, I GOT THIS!)
"who gave courage to his people and blah blah" (crap, where's the direct object? and the past...infinitive....thing?)
"blah blah blah!" (I....have no idea what that was even ABOUT!)
