This essay is fantastic stuff! Insightful analysis of the disturbing contrast between the source material and the response of some fans to it. (As you say, this is indicative of problems both inside and outside of fandom). Very clear and compelling. I'm making a note to share this essay with my students in my Star Wars class next Spring.
