Epic Supernatural Rewatch Notes
Jan. 8th, 2019 05:44 pmSo I decided a thing I should do is an epic rewatch of Supernatural. I tried rewatching S1 and immediately remembered why I was underwhelmed by the show in 2005 and wouldn't get into it for five years when a friend literally sat me down and got me hooked. S1 is so bad, omg, and the boys are so young and PRETTY I feel like a dirty old woman watching them. (For the record I'm the same age as Jared, so I know intellectual it's not actually as gross as it feels. But I do appreciate even more how beautifully they have aged and how the boys are exactly my cuppa today.)
Also, parts of fandom periodically complain about the "retconning" of John Winchester's abuse, but holy shit, watch those S1 episodes again, he was DEFINITELY an abusive sonuvabitch and general failure of a parent. He so was.
Anyway, I skipped to S2, which isn't much better. Also: So much t&a, which I found bizarre, then remembered that the show's makers were convinced for the longest time that the show was watched by dudes, which is just....hysterical in retrospect.
I also have a new appreciation for how S3 is such an effective reset and manages to communicate everything you need to watch the show from this new starting point. I'm not sure how much of that was purposeful and how much was happenstance. I have read claims that Kripke had a "plan" all along for the first five seasons, which I don't think can be fairly credited when actually watching S1 & 2--there's so much dragging space. Although it is interesting in early episodes that Dean is incredibly knowledgable about lore, research, and such like--which was eventually given over more to Sam so that Dean was the brawn and Sam the brains. (I also appreciate how often this is called BS in fic.)
Anyhow, stay tuned. We'll see how long this lasts.
