So rather unexpectedly, my state and uni are being sensible and made the decision last week to close things down effective Friday. My unit is going to have reduced public hours this week, and after that we are closed to the public until further notice. The plan is to build a rotating schedule so only a skeleton crew will have to come in at a time, but enough people will be available if there's an emergency. (We had water leaks in the vaults two weeks ago, right over shelves of 16th and 17th c. pamphlets. That could have been really bad, and now we're all paranoid and don't want to close utterly.)

This afternoon it was announced that our city has its first case of covid, but the person has no uni affiliation so we'll probably be okay.*

*As okay as you can get anyhow.

This weekend was chores and largely hunkering down. Scott went on one more shopping trip where he picked up more frozen pizzas, fruit, etc. Funnily enough he also found a full box of sanitizing wipes from his Africa trip last year.

My favorite conference also decided to go ahead and cancel this week, right after my uni declared we weren't allowed to travel anyhow. I'm disappointed, but relieved I won't miss anything, if that makes sense. I'm wondering what will happen with my SPN con in early June--either we'll be on the way to recovery then, or I imagine it will get cancelled too.

It's very weird watching people's reactions. There's a lot of people in denial. I called my Mom yesterday and argued with her about half an hour--she's 83 and thinks everyone is overreacting. I told her the fatality rates for people her age and that no, she really did need to lay low for a bit, and definitely not go to a series of weddings. SHEESH.

Anyways, all we can do is our parts to the best of our ability. I am glad at least that I work at a place where efforts are being made to take care of the student workers so they don't get fucked over. (I imagine how this would have gone over when I was a student worker. It would have been m i s e r y , and even more scrimping to get by.) I imagine we're in this for a long haul, so we'll see what we see.
