Apparently I am Essential
Mar. 22nd, 2020 04:05 pm At least according to the state/university, which is why, despite the governor ordering a shelter-in-place across the state yesterday, I still have to go to work three times a week.*
*Albeit briefly, to check on security etc., and we're still closed to the public.
But I am annoyed, and Scott Disapproves of TPTB. But so it goes!
In cheerier news, the contractors FINALLY finished the kitchen this week! (It only took...five months. *rolls eyes*) So we got to clean and put away all of the dishes and such that had been in boxes in the living room, and then yesterday we did a deep cleaning of the living room so now we can use it. Scott was reading on the couch this morning.
Meanwhile, I finally got to stress-bake, only I screwed up the recipe a bit. I was making chocolate chip cookies, because I am a simple woman, but then came the part where you cream together your white sugar, brown sugar, and melted butter. Well, turns out the brown sugar was hard as a rock, and while I was at work softening and breaking it down I guess the white sugar absorbed all the melted butter and/or it evaporated, and basically I ended up with a super dry batter. I tried to fix it with what I had to hand, which was a dash of olive oil and a bit of milk. This helped some, and the cookies came out edible, but not the promised "crisp and chewy" texture I was going for. Oh well.
Meanwhile it has been snowing today, but at least just enough for things to be pretty but not enough to really stick to the sidewalks, so at least I don't have to go shovel.
(I really am such a spoiled brat, aren't I?)
~
I've been reading that a number of places recommend journaling as a way to cope with goings on. I journal anyhow, but mostly I just feel annoyed with myself that I have some ideal writing time lined up but I'm not in the mood for writing. I do have deadlines, though this week I really should buckle the fuck up and make myself work though.

Date: 2020-03-23 01:00 am (UTC)Did you bake the cookies right after you mixed the batter or did you let it chill for awhile? I find some chilling can allow moisture to redistribute and gluten to relax.

Date: 2020-03-23 01:45 am (UTC)There was a series of emails this evening basically saying that the library wants everyone to come in as little as possible and after tomorrow you'll need advance notice and permissions from your supervisor, AD, and Dean to go in, so I wrote to my boss and asked if I was still supposed to go in and oversee a transfer. She wrote back immediately saying yes, as far as she knew, and she was filling out paperwork listing essential personnel, and I was on the list. Also, the library is tracking everyone who comes in and who they interact with for the city's health dept. So. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
re: the batter: I didn't think about chilling it, but the instructions didn't say to do that. The moral of the story: check your brown sugar first!!
