Every day i'm posting a picture of a book I like. Earlier this week I had a conversation with a friend about series that have diminishing returns. Sapkowski's Witcher series is *not* one of those, and indeed the series is a lot more like LOTR in the sense that it is one giant novel that has been chopped into five, not all that discrete, parts. It also has what I consider to be one of the best and most satisfying endings of all time (which nb. is *very* different from "happy endings"). The Lady in the Lake is the final volume, and much like with Return of the King you just get a series of gut punches and breathers as you hurtle to the end.

Apparently a lot of people have picked the books up in the wake of the popularity of the Netflix adaptation--which is based much more on the books than on the games. (The best way to think of the games is as licensed fanfic, because they genuinely transform and rework the characters and themes in satisfying ways themselves.) If you do pick them up, ping me so I can geek--so far I've only gotten Todd to read all of them and as per usual we argued about them for like three hours before coming to an "agree to disagree" conclusion. Scott has read through A Time of Contempt but is on a Japanese horror reading kick and Baptism of Fire is just SITTING on his nightstand like it doesn't have my favorite character in it just waiting to be introduced. *SIGH*
