A Book a Day: Life and Death
Jul. 30th, 2020 01:47 pm Every day I'm sharing an image of a book I like. Problematic fave alert! The og Twilight series is way more interesting as a cultural litmus test than it is as a series, but the tenth anniversary genderswap AU is actually amazeballs. For one thing, all of the genderswap characters have personalities that the originals did not, and Beau is, frankly, charming and hilarious. But it's also really interesting how predatory framing inherent in the og is lightened in the genderswap because our culture doesn't have that framework to talk about toxic women even though we really should. Edythe is a weird character and we should read her as problematic! But it's hard to do so because giving a hard look at revising gender roles is difficult, especially when you try to read them as a critique. TL;DR this is a delightfully weird and thought-provoking book that will never get a film adaptation and I have no sense of how many people actually read it since it came out so long after the initial wave of popularity. (Similarly with Midnight Sun coming out Tuesday, I have no sense than anyone has been waiting on it or what if anything will come of it.)
