A Book a Day: Truth: Red, White, & Black

 Every day I'm sharing an image of a book I like. Y'all know I'm a Captain America stan, and this is one of my favorite series from the comics, written following the declassification of documents of the Tuskegee Experiments. Going back and forth between the 1940s and the "now" of the early 2000s, Cap uncovers the story of the first Captain America, Isaiah Bradley--one of seven Black soldiers who were subjected to Erskine's early attempts at a super-soldier serum. The book is unusually unflinching in looking at the parallels of racist American brutality alongside the more commonly shown images of Nazi brutality; the artists and writers are clear that they are the flip sides of one another historically. Cap goes on a mission to restore Bradley to history, and opens the door for the introduction of Patriot in the Young Avengers. (Man, Young Avengers was good stuff.) The art in this series is also beautiful and plays with the imagery and motifs of work created in the Harlem Renaissance. One of my fave graphic novels of all time, and one that doesn't get enough attention.

God almighty this one is good. I read it during a party, sitting on a carpeted floor beside a bookcase, while everything raged around me for ~2 hours.

Be proud of me, I didn't steal it. :D

In general I am anti-book-theft, but in this case if people were at a party where there were good comics lying around and you were the only one appreciating them, I mean, clearly an argument could be made that you'd be a better owner. >_>
