We saw people taking kids trick-or-treating, and we turned off all the lights in the house and watched movies in the basement like assholes.

But like. Covid cases are up in our county and we're going into mitigation on Monday, so WTF were parents thinking???? Honestly?!?!

I'm so glad no one in my community trick-or-treated; I don't understand the mindset of people who aren't taking this seriously. They're just prolonging the situation-what happened to reason, Cait?!?

I suspect the logic was "keep things normal for the kids" but holy fucking shit why would you?? I know there were a couple of trunk-or-treats happening, do THAT for cryin' out loud!!!!

"Very bad at math" really covers it 'here' though I was pleased after a little scare of the bad sort my neighborhood mostly understood No, we'll have our fun, but not by going door to door.

Really, media consolidation has a lot to do with how easy it's to feed different micro markets totally different narratives.

Much with the college campuses, where they did not (from what I can tell) consult day camp counselors and events coordinators, there's been no instruction of positive injunctions. Like, "Tuesday anybody with a vehicle that's got racing stripes should play three songs with the windows down." or "Sports Team Pride" lane at the grocery store, your correctly worn mask lets you physically distanced gather with like enthusiasts. The issue is that we needed a more artisanal plan, because it is true what makes sense where population density is low won't work where it's high. Instead we had people slosh from one to the other, and now the other is returning the deed.

Yes exactly! Telling people what not to do is less than half the battle -- they need ideas of what to do instead.

I was actually really looking forward to sitting on my balcony and tossing bags of candy to people with gloved hands, since we didn't manage to construct a candy chute. Socially distanced candy! But you know me and my ridiculousness.

I don't think it's ridiculousness in your case--I think that the local situations vary.

As you mentioned above, if some local decision on how to go from house to house safely had been made and communicated, that would be fine; as it was, people were being directed instead to various trunk-or-treats in the community, so those people actively going from house to house instead were....doing their own thing. Which. Maybe they missed the memos?
