On the Ending of Supernatural

I mean, Jensen said he struggled with the ending, and now we know why. A year ago (or so) he sits down with the showrunners. "Okay, how does this end?" "Well you see, Dean dies by being shoved onto a rusty nail while fighting vampire mimes." "...What?" "Yeah, and then he goes to Heaven and drives around in the Impala listening to Kansas." "Huh?!" "And meanwhile Sam is on Earth living an apple pie life but clearly miserable and suffering for like forty more years." "I--okay. Where's Cas?" "Meh, offscreen somewhere. He helped fix Heaven but he doesn't have time to say hi or anything." "...."

Seriously. The most fucking bizarre experience of my fannish life.

When you lay it out like that it's really sad. I mean, Cas sacrificed himself for Dean only to never speak to him on screen again? There was no reunion for them? I'm glad that Sam and Dean were reunited in heaven but still.

It was tragedy without catharsis. And its extra annoying that they could have made little decisions, even in Covid, to mitigate that. A recording of "Hello Dean" offscreen and Dean smiling? Oh look, resolution with Cas. That blurry shot of the woman Sam married? Have him sign to her--now we know it's Eileen, who we last saw get snapped out of existence by God two episodes ago. Sam alone at the funeral pyre? Socially distance at least a few members of their family (Jody, Donna, au!Bobby) so we see how they expanded their family beyond themselves over the last fifteen years.
