A fascinating account of the HP convention in Britain.

I mingle with the audience, who are now jabbering questions at each other. Is a seventh part of the soul of Lord Voldemort (the ultimate dark wizard) nestling in Harry Potter's scar? Will Harry die, Christ-like, at the end of the series, redeeming wizardry on a technicality? Is Dumbledore (the saintly headmaster of Hogwarts) God? Is Professor Sprout a lesbian? Do werewolves smell? And does anyone, actually, like Harry?

Poor Harry. It's not his fault he's a teenage boy, y'know.

I saw that article--it reminded me of some newspaper accounts of Dragon*Con and the like, where it seems like the author is just determined to paint all fans as the crazies.

Though some Potter fans ARE the crazies, to be fair...

My very personal favorite experience like that was when I was reading an academic anthropological book about science fiction conventions. (I don't remember the title but it was by the woman who wrote "Enterprising Women.") Anyway the writer was interviewing a group of geeks and was all "And tell me what is the way you use to pick your leader?" and the geeks are like "Um. We vote."
