The new Lapham's just came out! Even better, their website features an excellent essay by Francine Prose on Original Sin and the place of women in religion:

Almost as soon as anyone (mostly women, for obvious reasons) started noticing or asking how the world’s religions viewed their female adherents, women—and I would assume some men—either had to face it or not, make excuses or not, question their faith or not. During the 1970s, feminists called attention to any number of ancient fertility-mother cults. But though pre-Christian cultures had goddesses, and priestesses in their temples, Greek and Roman myths are essentially crime blotters recording rapes, near rapes, and metamorphoses into animals or plants to avoid or atone for being raped. There is no word for heroine in Homeric Greek.

More ruminations later.

So I *meant* to be productive today. I've got article revisions to do, stuff to read, etc. But I woke up this morning and it's like, y'know, fuck it. I worked yesterday, I can totally take it easy sometimes.

BUT I cna't concentrate on anything. Grr. So Scott and I went to Barnes & Nobles to get sugary drinks and browse. I got a marble macchiato, Neal Stephenson's Anathem, and the new Lapham's which is about Medicine. This led to an interesting conversation with Scott in the coffeeshop as we started talking about leprosy, and over the sound of numerous conversations and espresso machines I kept hearing "leper colonies" as "leprechauns." Um, yeah.

Anyhow I was disappointed they didn't carry the new issue of American Scholar as it has an article about the decline of university English departments. It is online but I'd like a hardcopy I can shelve reasonably easily. As it is I envision printing this article out, sticking it in a book, and it getting lost in the dustmotes of time and my double-stacked shelves. Sigh.

So I think I'm going to go play WoW now. Incidentally my Alliance toon has joined Scott's guild and hijinks will probably ensue.

Went to B&N to get the new issue of Lapham's Quarterly. The theme is Travel, which is nice. Although I never understood why vacation time is in the summer when the weather pretty much everywhere pretty much sucks.

Anyhoo, mini-grump, or more like a pet peeve: I hate it when publishers design a nice looking book, nice artwork, and nothing but praise on it. WTF is it about? If I don't know what it's about, I'm not gonna blow $15-30 for cryin' out loud. Why is it harder to write something descriptive like "This book is about Susan who has an unfortunate accident with a train" instead of "This well-woven tapestry of intense feeling will leave those who love Lewis enraptured..." WTF does that even mean?!?! (Note: not real references, just what I came up with out of my weird little head.)

Sheesh. Thank gods tomorrow's Friday.

Pierogies!

Another full house this weekend, though under better circumstances mostly. Scott's Aunt Dorothy and cousin Ethan came to visit as Ethan had a scholarship tour of A&M through the weekend. We also have our friend Melanie staying with us for the moment due to unpleasant sewage issues at her home. It's fun though--kind of like having a small party all the time.

I was looking at my calendar for work this weekend and it is going to be pretty crazy. I *really* need to find some time to sit down and work on some research papers and proposals. There's also been a call for chapters for a book on Teaching Buffy that I want to write a chapter for.

Sigh. So much to do, so little time to do it in. And, I still want to level up in WoW for the new expansion release (I have one level to go) and I also got Warhammer if I can find time for that too.

Oh, and lastly, the New Lapham's Quarterly is out and I highly recommend it to anyone here in education. Its theme is "Ways of Learning" and it has some really great essays.

More later.

Did you read Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickled and Dimed: On Not Getting By in America? Well if not, Lewis Lapham (formerly of Harper's and currently of the wonderful Lapham's Quarterly made this short quasi-musical film.

So Harper's has put its entire historical archive online and you can access it for free if you have a subscription. I frankly think this is nothing short of fucking phenomenol and am looking forward to browsing. Tee hee.

PS The "The God of the Desert: Jreusalem and the Ecology of Monotheism" essay in the new January issue is a fascinating read.

Victory!
